Fishing use to be and still is in many Greek islands the main occupation of the inhabitants. The Greek seas and especially the Aegean are rich in many kinds of fishes that live in the Mediterranean waters. The most common way of fishing in Greece is by nets that have different names according to the kind of fishes like "manomena" for fishing on riffs, "apladia" or "palamidodihta" for the fishing of mackerels and tuna ,"Paragadi" line fishing for any kind of fish but mostly sword fish "gri gri" fishing with light boats that attract fishes like mackerels and other kind of fishes like fish bates and "trata" the traditional fishing that can be done by boats or from the shore.
