Naxos travel guide

Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades ,the island is separate from Paros only by a narrow strait . The main town and main port of Naxos is called Chora ,at the entrance of the port is the ancient Temple of Apollo. Naxos was inhabited before the end of the first cycladic period . Later Naxos then colonized by the Ionians and quickly become a prosperous island and dominated all the Cyclades .The Lions of Naxos on Delos mark that era. In 500 BC, the Persians occupied the island, and that marks the end of its expansion. Later Naxos joined the Athenian alliance at the sea battle of Salamis that lead to the defeat of the Persian fleet.Naxos made the first Greek Colony on Sicily during the 7th century BC.
