Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades ,the island is separate from Paros only by a narrow strait . The main town and main port of Naxos is called Chora ,at the entrance of the port is the ancient Temple of Apollo. Naxos was inhabited before the end of the first Cycladic period . Later Naxos then colonized by the Ionians and quickly become a prosperous island and dominated all the Cyclades .The Lions of Naxos on Delos mark that era. In 500 BC, the Persians occupied the island, and that marks the end of its expansion. Later Naxos joined the Athenian alliance at the sea battle of Salamis that lead to the defeat of the Persian fleet.Naxos made the first Greek Colony on Sicily during the 7th century BC.

Naxos is the largest (428 square kilometre) of the Cycladic Islands of Greece located in the Aegean. It is part of the Cyclades Prefecture that, along with the Dodecanese, makes it part of Southern Outskirts of the Aegean.

Its largest city and capital is Hora, which counts 12,000 inhabitants. The most important villages are Filoti, Apiranthos, Tragea, Koronos, Sangri and Apollonas.

Naxos is a known tourist destination with various archaeological sites and easy access. It has many very beautiful beaches considered by tourists like Agia Anna, Agios Procopios, Alikos, Kastraki, Mikri Vigla, Plaka and Agios Georgios, most of which are located on the western side of the island.

It is the most fertile island in the Cyclades and has high mountains (Mount Zas 1004 m).
