Saint Tropez accommodation
Saint Tropez is a famous sea resort in the department of Var in the
south of France, in Cote D'Azur. Famous for its glamorous and wealthy
visitors, often is called the Marbella of France. The legends about the Bay
of San Tropez goes back many centuries. One of those legents says that the
name arose from a Christian martyr, Saint Torpe, who refused to renounce his
faith and he was decapitated, his corpse was thrown on a boat. The boat was
dragged by the currents and arrived at the point that is today the gulf and
the city.
In the period from 1470 to 1672 the city was ruled by independent rulers who
were coming from the various guilds and were elected directly by the city's
inhabitants. The rulers had the prerogative to set up their own army in 1637
and managed to repulse the Spanish armada. The city has not paid taxes and
was not under the authority of the French state. But these privileges were
removed from the King Louis the 14th, and the city has since shifted to the
control of France.
In the decade of the 20's San Tropez started to attract international
celebrities. During World War II, and specifically on Aug. 15, 1944, the
beach of the town was the main point of landing of the allied forces during
the invasion of southern France. By the end of the war became the summer
refuge of the French existentialists but during the'50s and the 60's, and
with the contribution of Brizit Barnto and the film series of Luis de funes
Le Gendarme of Saint Tropez the city becomes well know all over the world.
St Tropez is a typical medieval city, famous for its countless luxury yachts
tied round the harbour towards her beachside cafes. Tourists from all
ethnicities and expensive sports cars roaming the streets.
The nightlife in Saint Tropez is very intense in the various night clubs and
bars of the town as well as on the many luxurious villas. Visitors enjoy
their coffee hoping to be seen, or that they will see someone famous. The
nearby beaches, can cover all tastes as there are quiet and remote but
populous. Some of the beaches are nude, that was actually the first topic of
the film of Luis De Funes and mainly what made St Tropez famous the first
nude beaches in Europe.
