Odense Denmark

Odense is the third biggest city in Denmark. It has a population around 200,000 people and is located on an island called 'Fyn' in the middle of Denmark.

Attractions: Odense is mostly known as he cy where the famous writer Hans Christian Andersen was born and you can visit the house where he was born and grew up in. There is also 'Fyrtejt' which is a modern kind of a museum where you can learn about Andersen and his fairy tales, both as an adult and as a child. Odense also houses the very interesting Danish Railway Museum. This museum is one of a kind and a great favourite with children. Here you are able to go for a ride in one of the old trains.

Odense Zoo is another popular attraction for families. It has been recently modernised and now includes a 'savanna' in a large area in the back. From Odense Zoo and Fruens boge it is possible to take a boat trip on the river that runs through the city. these cruises sometimes provide live jazz on the boat. Finally, Odense is an old city so you can also go for a walk in the old streets and see the old beautiful houses.

Transportation: Trains : From Odense it s possible to take the train to Copenhagen and Jutland every 30 minutes. From Jutland you can continue to Germany.

Buses: In the city of Odense buses run from early morning until around midnight. The fare is 15 Danish kroners/2 euros and they depart from the area around the train station and have stops around the city.

Places to Eat: If you want to try real Danish food you need to go to an old Danish (Kro) inn. Carls Lund in Fruens Bege is a cosy place in the shade of the trees and during the summer there is jazz every weekend. Restaurants to try are the following:

Danish food: Carls Lund, Sorte Bro Kro - expensive but very exclusive.
Mexican food: Birdeys - Norre gade
Tortilla Flats - Frederksgade
Italian Food: Italiano - (The oldest Italian restaurant n the city) - Vestergade, Mama's - Klaregade
Cafes: Frogges and Frank A are both good places to go.
Discotheques:Alibi, Mosaik and Retro are very good.
