Agathonisi
Information about the island of Agathonisi Greece
Agathonisi is surrounded by virgin beaches such as Spilia 800 meters
to the southwest of the port and Ghaidouroavlako a little further to the
south. Tsangari beach and Poros bay are also 3.5 km to the east of the
port.The quiet life in the island, the tranquility, the hospitality of
the inhabitants and the cleanness of the beaches,
makes Agathonisi an ideal place for those who opt for calm holidays, far
from crowded tourism.For visitors' accommodation there are many rooms
and apartments to rent in Agathonisi.
In the East of the island you can find the Palos and Vathy Pighadi beaches
and in the North the Maistros beach.At the eastern part of the Agathonisi
island you find the Tholi, Byzantine ruins of the 11th century. In the
northern part of the island there are ancient ruins in the area "Kastraki".
There are also ancient settlements in the areas of Ai Yiannis and Alonia.Agathonisi
is connected by ferry with Patmos, Samos and through them with Rhodes
and Piraeus. During the summer months there is a daily connection by ferry
and flying dolphins with the other islands of the Dodecanese and with
Samos. In winter there are 5 itineraries daily.
Monasteries and Churches :
In the port of the island you find the churches of Aghios Gheorghios,
Aghios Ioannis Prodromos and Aghia Irini Chrysovalandou, of Aghios Ioannis
Theologhos and of Panaghia.
There are also in the island the country churches of Aghios Pandeleimon,
Aghios Nikolaos, Aghios Charalambos, and Metamorphosi tou Sotiros.
Springs :
There are no springs, with the exception of some wells with brackish water.
There is a drilling in the island catering for the needs of the farmers
and stock raisers.
Caves :
There are five caves near the coast which in the past were used as shelters.
Folklore feasts and Celebrations :
On July 27, the feast of Aghios Pandeleimon takes place in Mikro Chorio.
The feast of Panaghia also takes place on August 15.
Customs:
In Eastern, the inhabitants of the island cook pies using the traditional
cheese and other dairy products. They also cook the traditional goat in
a stone-oven.
